Job Resiliens Research · AI Job Risk Index · Updated November 4, 2026
Research and first drafts move faster. A licence, a courtroom, and the advice a client can rely on still sit with a person.
United Kingdom
The Solicitors Regulation Authority reported 181,481 practising solicitors in England and Wales at the end of September 2026, and 217,550 solicitors on the roll. That is a headcount of people allowed to practise, not a forecast of how many legal jobs AI removes. Start with lawyers and paralegals.
European Union
Job Resiliens does not publish an EU-wide lawyer or paralegal employment total on this page. Legal titles, bars, and rights of audience are national. Use the same task split as the UK and US pages, then check your own responsibilities. See the Europe hub.
United States
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook covers lawyers. The BLS employment projections table lists lawyers (SOC 23-1011) growing 4.7 percent from 2025 to 2035, from 863,700 to 904,300 jobs, with about 28,700 openings a year. Paralegals and legal assistants (SOC 23-2011) are listed at −0.3 percent, from 404,900 to 403,800, with about 40,800 openings a year. See the United States hub.
India
The India answers stay on the lawyer and paralegal pages. Job Resiliens does not publish a separate India-only replacement rate. See the India hub.
FAQ
Will AI replace lawyers and paralegals in Europe?
Not as a single European rate. Job Resiliens rates lawyers Low exposure and paralegals High exposure on the AI Job Risk Index, from the task split on each page. England and Wales had 181,481 practising solicitors in September 2026, according to the Solicitors Regulation Authority. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects lawyer employment up 4.7 percent from 2025 to 2035. This page does not publish an EU-wide lawyer headcount.
Are paralegal tasks more exposed than courtroom work?
Yes, on the published Index. Paralegal work is High exposure because document review, research, and first drafts are checkable and high-volume. Courtroom advocacy and signed legal advice stay with a licensed lawyer and are the Low-exposure half of legal work.
Where should I start if I work in legal services in the UK or EU?
Read the lawyer and paralegal pages, then check your own tasks. A free AI Exposure Score uses your responsibilities, not a country label. Local starting points are on the Europe hub and the India hub.
Check the work you actually do
