3 Product Frameworks Worth Knowing Beyond MVP and RICE
MVP, Working Backwards, and RICE prioritization get most of the attention in product-management content -- three other frameworks do just as much real work and get mentioned far less.
Rather than tracking dozens of dashboards, the North Star Framework centers a team around one metric that best captures the actual value a product delivers to customers, plus a handful of input metrics that genuinely drive it. The idea, popularized broadly across growth and product-analytics practice, particularly by Amplitude, is that a team optimizing scattered dashboards in isolation drifts apart over time; a team aligned on one number that represents real customer value, plus the specific levers that move it, stays coordinated even as day-to-day priorities shift.
Jobs to Be Done, most associated with Clayton Christensen's writing -- his recurring example is that people do not want a drill, they want a hole in the wall, and often not even that, they want the shelf the hole was for -- reframes a customer not as a demographic persona but as someone hiring a product to make progress on a specific job in a specific circumstance. Two people who look identical on a persona sheet can be hiring completely different "jobs" from the same product category, which is why JTBD-style research digs into the circumstance that triggered someone's search for a solution, not just who that person is on paper.
Teresa Torres' Opportunity Solution Tree gives that same customer research an actual visual structure: one desired outcome at the top, the real customer opportunities -- needs, pain points, desires -- that could move it underneath, and multiple candidate solutions tested under each opportunity before anything gets committed to. Its real value is less the diagram itself and more what it prevents: jumping straight from a business outcome to a single, already-decided solution without ever surfacing the other opportunities that same outcome could have been attacked from.
Drawing on Clayton Christensen's Jobs to Be Done framework, Teresa Torres' Continuous Discovery Habits and Opportunity Solution Tree, and general growth/product-analytics practice on North Star Metrics, particularly as popularized by Amplitude.
