Will AI replace receptionists?
Job Resiliens Research · Original task-level analysis for this occupation · Part of the AI Job Risk Index · Methodology · About · Updated November 4, 2026
Scheduling, routing, and standard questions are already the automatable half of a front desk. Greeting a specific person and handling a messy arrival are not.
United States
The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook covers receptionists. The employment projections table lists receptionists and information clerks (SOC 43-4171) at −1.7 percent from 2025 to 2035, from 947,500 to 931,600 jobs, a decline of 16,000, with about 105,100 openings a year. See the United States hub.
United Kingdom
The Office for National Statistics reported that, in July to October 2023, 43 percent of adults in administrative and secretarial occupations thought AI could put their job at risk. That is the closest published ONS occupation group, not a receptionist headcount. This page does not cite a separate UK receptionist employment total. See the Europe hub.
European Union
Eurostat’s labour force survey (dataset lfsa_egan22d) reports 1,477,600 people aged 15 to 64 employed in NACE division 82 in the EU-27 in 2024. That division is office administrative, office support, and other business support activities. It includes call-centre activities and is wider than reception work, so it is not a receptionist replacement rate.
India
Job Resiliens does not publish an India-only replacement rate for receptionists. Front desks still mix in-person welcome with routine scheduling. See the India hub.
What's already automated
- Scheduling and reminders — booking, rescheduling, and standard reminders are structured and checkable.
- Call routing and repeated questions — hours, directions, and “who do I ask” have a right answer a tool can give.
What isn't automated
- The person at the door — an upset visitor, a delivery that does not match the book, or someone who needs a human welcome is not a form.
- Judgment when the script fails — deciding who can wait, who needs a person now, and what not to say still sits at the desk.

FAQ
Will AI replace receptionists?
Not every front desk. Receptionists are High exposure on the Job Resiliens AI Job Risk Index because scheduling, routing, and repeated questions are already automatable. The in-person exception stays human. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists receptionists and information clerks down 1.7 percent from 2025 to 2035, with about 105,100 openings a year.
Is a receptionist job safer than customer service?
Both are High exposure on the Index. Customer service is covered on its own page. A receptionist who mostly routes standard calls is closer to that work than a receptionist whose day is the door and the exceptions.
Are receptionists at risk from AI in the UK?
The Office for National Statistics found that 43 percent of adults in administrative and secretarial occupations thought AI could put their job at risk, in a survey from July to October 2023. That is a perception figure for the occupation group, not a UK receptionist layoff count.
- The person at the door — an upset visitor, a delivery that does not match the book, or someone who needs a human welcome is not a form.
- Judgment when the script fails — deciding who can wait, who needs a person now, and what not to say still sits at the desk.
