Career Change · SDE → SDM
How to move from sde to sdm
The best engineers don't automatically make the best managers — the move trades technical depth for a completely different set of skills: hiring, coaching, and org design.
SDM (software development manager) is the title Amazon and a handful of other companies use for what most of the industry calls engineering manager — this guide applies to both. The transition is less about technical readiness and more about whether you actually want to spend your days on people problems instead of code.
What carries over, and what you'll need to build
Typical responsibility changes
Your output stops being code and starts being your team's output. Success is measured by whether your reports are growing, whether the team ships reliably, and whether you're making good hiring and prioritization calls — not by your own commits. Most new managers underestimate how much of the job is 1:1s, hiring loops, and cross-team coordination versus technical work.
A realistic transition roadmap
- Start leading without the title. Volunteer to run planning for a project, mentor a junior engineer formally, or lead a small initiative — this is the lowest-risk way to test whether you actually enjoy the people-leadership parts of the job.
- Ask your current manager for a shot at it. Internal promotion to manager, on a team where your technical credibility is already established, is far easier than an external EM job search with no management experience.
- Get explicit about giving hard feedback early. The single most common new-manager failure is avoiding difficult conversations too long — practicing direct, kind feedback before you're responsible for someone's performance review is worth doing deliberately.
- Expect a real dip in technical hands-on time. Budget for feeling behind on the codebase for the first several months — that's normal, not a sign you made the wrong move, and it stabilizes once your team-leadership rhythm settles.
Portfolio and project ideas
Document a project where you led without formal authority — how you handled a disagreement, how you unblocked someone, what you'd do differently. Hiring managers for a first EM role weight real examples of judgment under ambiguity far more than a title.
Internal mobility strategy
This move is almost always easier internally than externally. Ask your manager directly whether they see you on a management track, volunteer for a tech-lead-manager hybrid role if your company has one, and make your interest known well before a team actually needs a new manager — by the time there's an open req, the internal decision is often already made informally.
How AI is reshaping both sides of this move
For SDEs, AI writes a lot of the code now, shifting the value of the role toward judgment and architecture — see the full AI risk breakdown for software developers. For SDMs/engineering managers, status reporting is automating while hiring, coaching, and org design stay human — see the full AI risk breakdown for engineering managers.
How long does it take to move from SDE to SDM?
Typically 1-3 years of demonstrated informal leadership (mentoring, project leads) before a first formal management role, though timelines vary a lot by company and how proactively you seek out leadership opportunities.
Do I need to give up coding entirely as an SDM?
Mostly, yes, for hands-on production coding — your job becomes your team's output. Some managers stay technical enough to review designs and unblock hard problems, but daily feature coding isn't compatible with the job.
